COFFEE AND IDEOLOGY

A nice story happened in the early independence era.

It was told that in Dewan Konstituante Session (parliament in the 1950’s), which discussed the fundamental of the Republic of Indonesia (1956-1959), there were a fierce argument between Mohammad Natsir, a Masyumi figure who is anti-Communist, and Aidit, a leading figure of PKI.

They argued with each other on what should be tha state ideology of Indonesia. Both have ideological platform, which contradicted each other. However, the ideological difference didn’t spoil their personal relationship.

After the session, which was full arguments, both of them could chat, laugh together while having coffee in the cafeteria of the Parliamentary Building.

The different ideology between Natsir and Aidit did not make them enemies in politics. They were friends and respected each other in spite of the ideological difference.
